A Walk at Waterloo

A Walk at Waterloo

Summer seems to have arrived late on Skye this year so when the sun shines we make the most of it. With high clouds and a warm breeze we headed south for a walk at Waterloo. It is a short and easy walk with rewarding views over Broadford Bay and Beinn Na Caillach.

Getting to the Waterloo

Waterloo is a small township south of Broadford, in between Harrapool and Breakish. As you leave Broadford heading towards the Skye Bridge it is on your left, coming onto the island it is on your right

Parking for the Waterloo Road

There is a small parking area on the left at the start of the Waterloo Road. If you park considerately there is enough space for 4 vehicles. We were lucky enough to get a space here. Do not park in the road as you will obstruct driveways and access. Alternatively, if you are capable of a longer walk there are many places to park in Broadford or Harrapool. You can then walk along the pavement, complete with all it’s brand new dropped kerbs to the Waterloo Road turning.

The township of Waterloo is just one single track dead end road. Due to this it is relatively quiet. The local delivery driver was out doing his deliveries when we were there but there were plenty of driveways, passing places and a low grass verge to step out of the way of traffic. The road does run beside the beach so be aware that there may be people driving down to use the beach as well as residents. While we were there we saw someone out kayaking in the sea.

Access to the beach is not easy but we did notice a couple of places where Sarah may be able to get down onto the beach with her two sticks so we may be back to investigate further. Immediately in front of you it is a cobble shore which leads onto sand. So after the initial problem of accessing it, it would be a relatively easy walk.

The Waterloo Road is a quiet road, with a good tarmac surface and lovely views out over the sea. You can walk as far as you are able and then turn back. It is approximately 1km/0.6miles from the parking space to the turning point at the end of the road. At the end there is a footpath which may warrant further investigation at another time. This leads cross country to Ashaig and the huge sandy beach there.

After our walk at Waterloo we went to The Coffee Bothy, a favourite of ours, for lunch.

Then, on an impulse decided to pop down to Torrin to see our friends at Amy’s Place for afternoon coffee and cake.
