The Old Road at Skeabost

The old road at Skeabost was once the only connection between the north and south of the Island. Later, it was turned into a single track road running over the Old Skeabost bridge connecting Skeabost with Portree. A new dual road eventually replaced the road, but as with many of Skye’s old roads it remains as a footpath.

We decided to try this walk when we did as we were looking for somewhere we would be able to enjoy the last of the autumn colours. It certainly did not disappoint.

Chocolates of Glenshiel

Chocolates of Glenshiel was founded by Finlay MacDonald in 2016 when he was just 16. You will see their chocolate stocked in many places while you are visiting Skye. After starting his business at home Finlay has now opened a chocolate centre in Shiel Bridge. Here you will find a cafe and gift shop as well as a peek at the chocolate making operation. We decided to stop here for a sweet treat as we were in the area.

Glenelg

We arrived in Glenelg via The Original Glenelg to Skye Ferry and had a lot of exploring ahead of us. If you are only visiting for the day leave yourself plenty of time as there is a lot to explore here. And the most fun fact about Glenelg is…Glenelg Twinned with Mars. Yes you read that correctly…Mars!

The Original Glenelg to Skye Ferry

The Original Glenelg to Skye Ferry runs seasonally from Kylerhea on the Isle of Skye to Glenelg, April to October. The MV Glenachulish is the last remaining manually operated turntable ferry in the world. You undertake a very special journey in the most beautiful location.

Carbost War Memorial

After lunch at Cafe Cuil, we took a short drive to the parking area below Carbost War Memorial for a short and steep walk. Then we retraced our tracks down to the Merkadale burial ground, very close to Cafe Cuil for a short shoreside wander.

Cafe Cuil

Cafe Cuil is the new name for the business formerly known as Donald John’s. Located in the same building in Satran on the Minginish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye. On the B8009 about a mile before the turn off to Glen Brittle on the left. You will see the bright red roof. With a new owner the building has had an interior and menu refresh. However it remains just as accessible as before.

Fairy Pools

The Fairy Pools are one of the top attractions on the Isle of Skye. Attracting thousands of visitors every year to this beautiful corner of the island. Recently the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland has invested huge amounts into the infrastructure to support these visitor numbers. A new car park, toilet block and path have been created which increase accessibility and protect the environment surrounding the pools.

Uig Community Woodland

The Uig Community Woodland comprises of three separate walks. The Shore Wood Wander is very accessible for wheelchair and walkers. The other two routes need a lot more mobility and are not wheelchair friendly. If you are in the north end of Skye it is a lovely spot to have a wander.

Tulach Ard

Tulach Ard or Ard Hill in it’s English translation is a short and strenuous walk 1.25 miles walk in Lochalsh. We wouldn’t recommend it for wheelchairs as it is steep and uneven, however Sarah did manage relatively well with her wheeled walker. The path is well maintained by Forestry Commission Scotland.

The Caledonian Cafe

The Caledonian Cafe is on Wentworth Street in the centre of the village of Portree on the Isle of Skye. A small but popular cafe to meet and have lunch, coffee or ice cream . It has been closed for a couple of years but is now open again.
