Donald John’s Cafe

Donald John’s has a new owner and is rebranded as Cafe Cuil. We have not yet visited so cannot comment on any changes to the establishment. We will leave the original post up to give folks and idea of what they may find if they visit before we do.

Donald John’s Cafe at Satran near Carbost is a relatively new venture here on Skye and although there is plenty of competition in the area it is proving very popular. It is a cafe, shop and general meeting place for folks on the way to the Fairy Pools, Talisker Distillery or Glen Brittle.

On arriving you see the car park is gravelled but the two disabled spaces are tarmac. Conveniently that tarmac leads right to the front door. Inside all is level access including the little shop area selling essential supplies. Very handy for those camping or staying in self catering accommodation in the area. There is also an area selling souvenirs. The disabled toilet is in a separate room from the baby changing area. It is very spacious and I was pleased to notice a flip top bin rather than the usual foot operated pedal bin.

The cafe area is also spacious though half of the tables are high tables with bar stool type chairs. But, although they do not take bookings if you need a low table and contact them in advance to notify them of this they will do their best to accommodate you. The same goes for larger groups of disabled customers though they may require those to pre order their food to avoid a long wait as they get very busy. Just ask at the counter or give them a call.

There is no table service for ordering though food is brought to the tables when ready. You order at the counter where you can also purchase drinks & cakes. Due to the popularity of the place you may need an able bodied person in your group when visiting here to help with carrying trays as staff are very busy.

Food on offer is a selection of sandwiches, soup and a few cooked meals. There is a specials board on the sideboard with extra dishes on. Breakfast seems to be a particular speciality and they offer both vegetarian and vegan options.

They also offer gluten free bread and cakes. And there is a selection of soft drinks, teas, and coffees.

We both had toasted sandwiches which were served with salad and coleslaw. Mine was Brie and Cranberry and Melanie had Ham and Cheese. Followed by the obligatory, for us anyway (all in the name of research you understand), cakes. The cake portions were very generous. Melanie had Carrot Cake, huge and very tasty. The Rocky Road I had was rather much even for me which is really saying something.

As Donald John’s Cafe is a new venture here on Skye this first visit marks it as one to watch. You can rely on myself and Melanie to undertake that task for you.
