An Talla Mòr 1820 is situated in a newly converted church building in central Portree. The former Parish Church on Bank Street has stood derelict for many years so it is lovely to see such a sympathetic renovation. Now a cafe the building has returned to the glory it deserves.

Portree Accessibility and Maps

Wentworth Street Portree

We have created a map showing the location of dropped kerbs, bench seating and rubbish bins in the centre of Portree village. This has been undertaken as part of Skye and Lochalsh Council for Voluntary Organisation‘s Active Journeys Skye and Lochalsh Project. The is a great project for the area with funding from Paths For All and Think Health Think Nature. We aim to promote the health benefits of walking for daily journeys and highlight accessibility of the village.

Edinbane Old Road

Last week we had a lovely walk down Edinbane Old Road. It was lovely until the rain came and we got drenched! That said it is an excellent surface for everyone to use, probably better than the current road that vehicles use every day. With that in mind it would be safe and accessible for wheelchairs, pushchairs, dog walkers, kids scooters and walkers alike.

Kilt Rock and Mealt Waterfall

Kilt Rock and Mealt Waterfall is located on the A855 at Ellishadder, 15 miles north of Portree and 2 miles south of Staffin. There is a narrow access road to a car park where you need to park considerately. The car park is not marked out and gets very busy in summer so a bit of care is needed. There is no rush, the cliffs and waterfalls have been there for millennia and aren’t leaving in a hurry!

Glen Varragill Forest Walk

This Glen Varragill Forest Walk follows an old logging track which runs parallel to the A87 Sligachan to Portree. Heading North towards Portree from Sligachan the track starts approximately 4km or 2.5 miles up Glen Varragill on your left. The logging track starts at the A87 and bends down to the River Varragill crossing a bridge. There are a couple of parking spots immediately on your left at the top of the track.

Glamaig Waterfalls

Firstly the walk to Glamaig Waterfalls is not suitable for wheelchair users or rollator users. However it is a rewarding gentle walk of just under 2 km or 1.25 miles in old money! It is on a good path and very easy going. The Glamaig waterfalls walk would be perfect for anyone who is a little unfit or is looking to regain some fitness by starting with some gentle walks. Depending on how fast you walk it will take from about 40 minutes to go there and back. Maybe a little longer if you need to. Even after rain the path is a good surface to walk on, and the waterfall is even more spectacular. Don’t get this walk confused with the Allt Dearg Waterfalls on the opposite side of Glen Sligachan, we’ll cover that another time!

The Black Lochs Broadford

Walking to The Black Lochs above the village of Broadford is relatively simple and very accessible for disabled people of all abilities. The path is essentially the old tarmac surface of the A851 before the road was upgraded and moved slightly. The walk starts just south of Broadford and finishes near the turn off for Drumfearn. A great path for both wheelchair users and runners alike.

Aros Centre Portree

The Aros Centre Portree
The Aros Centre Portree

The Aros Centre is now the Isle of Skye Candle Company Visitor Centre. Same building, same place but all new interior and offering.

The Aros Centre on the edge of Portree is home to so many different things for the local community and visitors to Skye. Primarily a tourist will see it as a visitors centre, with gifts, books and a cafe. For Skye it serves as a community hub, cinema, theatre and meeting place. Here we will explore what the Aros Centre Portree has to offer in terms of accessibility for the disabled.
