An Talla Mòr 1820 is situated in a newly converted church building in central Portree. The former Parish Church on Bank Street has stood derelict for many years so it is lovely to see such a sympathetic renovation. Now a cafe the building has returned to the glory it deserves.

Parking

There is a public car park between An Talla Mòr and the Tourist Information Office with disabled spaces. Do not park on the other side of the building as that is only there for customers of the Royal Bank.

On the mezzanine
On the mezzanine

The entrance to downstairs is level access. Upstairs there is a lovely mezzanine area and the stairs have a handrail. If you are comfortable with stairs you may want to venture up and check out the view. Be warned though, the upstairs seating is tub chairs so if you would have difficulty getting in and out of these you may want to stick to the high backed dining chairs downstairs. The Ladies and Gents toilets are located upstairs, whilst the disabled toilet is downstairs to the side of the bar. It is very spacious and has plenty of grab handles.

Outside seating
Outside seating

If the weather is nice there is some seating outside to the front and side of the building. The outside area is gravel so may not be suitable for everyone but Sarah was able to manage with her stick. The outside seating is round picnic tables with benches which have been cleverly designed in sections so there is no need to climb over them. There are also some regular picnic benches if you wish to park your wheelchair at the end of one.

Food and Drink at An Talla Mòr 1820

Menu

1820 serve a selection of light meals, cakes and drinks. They also have an alcohol licence and an impressive wooden bar for you to enjoy a cheeky “deoch” from. As 1820 has only just opened we have only experienced it during Covid-19 distancing measures. We look forward to seeing how it will operate when life returns to normal. Currently you purchase the food at the counter and take it to your table. On this occasion Sarah and Melanie both had the same, Lattes and a slice Rhubarb and Custard cake. On an earlier solo visit Sarah had also sampled a slice of a lovely Banana Toffee cake.

It is a lovely use for this old building and has been done with the needs of disabled people firmly in mind. We look forward to having many visits in the future.
