Bog Myrtle Cafe

Bog Myrtle Cafe is a quirky Cafe and Bookshop located in Struan, Isle for Skye. Accessibility is a bit tricky as it is on the first floor but with a bit of help from the owners we managed. Here is how we got on.

Bog Myrtle Cafe is located centrally in Struan, set back off the road with parking between the cafe and the green. The front door to the Cafe is up 3 high steps and then a further flight of steps to the cafe itself. One of the owners saw us struggling so showed us a ramp at the far end of the building which took us up to a side door. It is a bit steep but there is a handrail to help. It was a hot summers day so the side door was propped open. In cooler inclement weather you may need to ask them to open the door for you, maybe call ahead if you are unsure. The owners here are very helpful. Outside on the grass in front of the cafe there are several picnic tables.

The toilets are downstairs but can be accessed by the front entrance. Sadly due to the nature of the building the toilets would not be accessible for anyone in a wheelchair. It is either a flight of stairs down from the cafe or 3 high steps at the front door. Some older buildings simply have problems with no easy fixes.

Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast is served 10am-12pm and then lunch from 12pm. They offer home made soup, pizza bread, ciabattas (check the specials board for fillings) and other light meals. There is also a large selection of speciality teas, coffees and soft drinks. The counter top is laden with home baking which we surprisingly did not sample on this visit. But it gives us a reason to go back as we have found quite a few walks in the area we need to explore.

Sarah had Carrot and Lentil soup with a savoury muffin while Melanie had a smoked venison ciabatta. Both washed down by cold refreshing Fruit Presse. The food was delicious.

Apart from the lovely food one of the attractions of Bog Myrtle is that it is also a second hand bookshop. They have a wide range of both fiction and non-fiction on offer and both adults and children are catered for. Fortunately Sarah managed to leave with only a bag of books this time, unlike the box full she acquired on her first visit. The bookcases are spaced out between the tables, so you can try to get a table near a section which interests you and browse while you eat.
