Relish Portree is a very popular Deli and now also a cafe. Popular with locals and visitors alike it is a place to find good quality freshly prepared food in central Portree. The Deli and counter downstairs is highly accessible. The new cafe upstairs will be tricky if you struggle with or cannot manage stairs.
On a typical Spring day on Skye when the weather changes every 15 minutes we headed to Portree Forest. Between the trees we could shelter from any rain or hail, and enjoy the sunbeams penetrating through the tree canopy. It is a walk enjoyed by many locals and is relatively straightforward. However winter storms have eroded parts of the path so wheelchair users now may find access quite difficult. Here is how we got on.
The Stardust Boat Trips run out of Portree Harbour covering up to 20 miles at sea. Ordinarily there are two trips to enjoy – Portree Harbour and the Sound of Raasay. Due to Covid-19 restrictions just the Sound of Raasay trip is running but to be honest this is the one we would have chosen to go on. We chose a sailing on the Stardust II as it is a wheelchair accessible vessel. Here is how our day went…

An Talla Mòr 1820 is situated in a newly converted church building in central Portree. The former Parish Church on Bank Street has stood derelict for many years so it is lovely to see such a sympathetic renovation. Now a cafe the building has returned to the glory it deserves.
We have created a map showing the location of dropped kerbs, bench seating and rubbish bins in the centre of Portree village. This has been undertaken as part of Skye and Lochalsh Council for Voluntary Organisation‘s Active Journeys Skye and Lochalsh Project. The is a great project for the area with funding from Paths For All and Think Health Think Nature. We aim to promote the health benefits of walking for daily journeys and highlight accessibility of the village.
Looking across Portree Harbour from the village there is a pristine piece of green land. Usually adorned with a flagpole which sadly broke in a early winter storm of 2020. This area is home to the Nicolson Clan Memorial. The walk from the village centre (Somerled Square) to the memorial is approximately 2.5km or 1.5 miles . Walking halfway on the footpath and halfway on the pathless Scorrybreac Road. Sarah found it quite tricky in places which we will describe at length below.
Portree library is located in the Fingal Centre situated next to Portree High School.
Disabled Parking
Disabled parking at Portree Library
There are two car parks, one off the Dunvegan Road just off the junction near the pedestrian crossing and one off Viewfield Road at the front of the school building. Both offer disabled parking spaces, there are 8 spaces in the rear car park. The one to the front is nearer the entrance but is often busier and as the outdoor facilities for the school are near here it may be difficult to find a space at certain times. The front doors are automatic doors and the library door has a push pad. I remember on one of my visits there as I headed towards the library door a helpful schoolboy pushed the pad for me so the door was open and waiting as I arrived there. Seems chivalry lives on in the Highlands.
