Cafe Cuil is the new name for the business formerly known as Donald John’s. Located in the same building in Satran on the Minginish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye. On the B8009 about a mile before the turn off to Glen Brittle on the left. You will see the bright red roof. With a new owner the building has had an interior and menu refresh. However it remains just as accessible as before.
The Cafe Cuil Menu
Cafe Cuil states that their menu is Hebridean Brunch and Lunch inspired by the wild landscape of Skye. This claim does not fall short when you read the menu. It is packed full of farmed and foraged local ingredients such as Lochalsh Beef and local gorse flowers. Because of this the menu is likely to change due to the season and availability of produce.
The dishes are a little more imaginative as well, the traditional dish of smoked salmon and scrambled egg is served with fresh local crab instead of salmon. This is the dish Sarah chose and it was served with the most colourful heirloom tomatoes. As you can see the menu caters for a lot of dietary requirements.
Melanie ordered the Beef Brisket toastie created with the local Lochalsh Beef, a definite winner and is head and shoulders above your average toastie.
As well as the savoury menu there is a very well stocked cake counter. Tempted as we were by the cakes we had lunch and headed off on a local walk. On our way back we stopped for a cheeky latte and cake. Spoilt for choice we ended up having the same cake, a moist and gooey yet crisp sea salted brownie – yum!
Accessibility at Cafe Cuil
Accessibility has not changed despite the transfer of business to the new owners. There are still two designated disabled parking spaces at the front door. With a tarmac path up to a mechanised front door. The whole restaurant is on one, ground floor level. All the furniture is free standing and well spaced so there should be no problem with wheelchairs and walking equipment. The disabled toilet also remains unchanged so has everything you require from a disabled loo. It is table service so once you are seated there is no need to get up and move around unless you want to go and ogle at the cake counter!
On the left as you go in there is a small shop with a few grocery essentials and a few gifts from other local businesses. This is just before the takeaway counter where you can order your food to takeaway of course. There are a few picnic benches outside for use on a nice day but these are on gravel and up a kerb so may not be accessible to all.
We will be back next time we are over that way as there are a few more menu items we would like to try!
