New for 2022 in Portree is the Isle of Skye Candle Company Visitor Centre. Housed in what was formerly the Aros Centre on Viewfield Road. The new Visitor Centre still hosts the Cinema, Las Port Righ as well as a refurbished bar and restaurant. In the future it will also house the Isle of Skye Candle Company visitor experience.
Location of the Isle of Skye Candle Company Visitor Centre
Located on the A87 just on the south side of Portree opposite the cemetery. There is a large car park in front of the building and further parking to the left hand side of the entrance road. Close to the door you will find 3 disabled parking spaces. Whilst work is still on going at the premises this may change and we will update further as any changes happen. At the far end of the car park there is an Electric Vehicle charging point. It is level entry between the car park and the front door of the centre.
Las, Port Righ
As you enter the building, on your left you will find Las Port Righ which is the foyer for the cinema auditorium. The cinema is also a stage for showing live events such a music and drama. There are two dedicated wheelchair accessible spaces on either side of the lower auditorium. These spaces are situated in a row of single seats so if you need more space this row may also be good for you. There are also two rows of single seats upstairs which is accessed by a lift making them quite accessible. These spaces would give you somewhere to safely leave a wheeled walking frame or sticks close to your seat. Much better than trying shuffle along a traditional row.
The cinema lobby is currently under going refurbishment, so we will update you when it is complete.
Gasta Port Righ
The old restaurant has had a major overhaul and has reopened as Gasta Port Righ. This is now the sister restaurant to Deli Gasta in Broadford. It is open from 10am every day and is fully accessible. There is free standing furniture on the restaurant floor so tables and chairs can make any configuration. It is all level access from the front door so wheelchairs can move around with ease. There are a few booth style tables at the far end of the restaurant which are up one step. So there really is a space for everyone. Within the restaurant is also a licensed bar and a wood fired pizza oven.
The menu has seven speciality pizzas which cover vegan, vegetarian and regular dietary requirements. There are also a selection of toasted ciabattas, soup of the day, salad bowl and filled croissants. To satisfy your sweet tooth there is a good selection of cakes, cookies, scones and more. A lot of the baking choices meet the needs of varying dietary requirements. The food is fresh and very tasty. If you love a bit of modern technology you can order and pay at the table using a QR code. However if this isn’t for you the friendly staff will happily come to your table and take your order the old fashioned way.
The Isle of Skye Candle Company Visitor Centre
In the centre of the Visitor Centre are some newly refurbished toilets that are fully accessible.
Here you will also find The Isle of Skye Candle Company shop which has many items displayed at a low level for easy visibility. There is also plenty of floor space on the shop floor to move around in a wheelchair or use a walking frame. The rest of the Visitor Experience is under construction so we will report back in when it is fully open. But in the meantime we highly recommend a visit as we think you will love the new look centre.
