The Dunvegan

The Dunvegan is a restaurant, cafe and deli-shop situated in Dunvegan, north west Skye. It is a great place from where you can explore many of Skye’s attractions. Within a couple of minutes you are on the road to Dunvegan Castle and the Coral beach at Claigan. In the other direction you will be on the road to Bharcasaig Bay and Neist Point. Yet only less than 20 miles from Portree. We joined our visit to The Dunvegan to one with Dunvegan Castle.

Inside The Dunvegan
Inside The Dunvegan

The Dunvegan is situated at the junction of A850 and A863 in, surprisingly enough, Dunvegan. There is a car park to the left as you look at the building. This is down a gentle slope so if this would be a problem for you there are a couple of spaces at the front entrance on the road. As we parked here Sarah only needed her stick but there would have been room for her wheeled walker if she had been using it. There is a slight ramp at the entrance. Once inside there is level access in the restaurant and the furniture can be moved so it should also be able to accommodate a wheelchair.

Our lunch

The Dunvegan offers a selection of snacks and light meals, hot and cold drinks at lunch time. There was an amazing selection of cakes to choose from, which of course we did. They offer table service.

Melanie had a focaccia, she had had one before as a takeaway during lockdown and enjoyed it so much she wanted to have it again. Sarah had the Dun-“vegan” Board, a selection of vegan nibbles and a hearty chickpea soup. The Dunvegan pride themselves on their fresh home made food.

For desert we both both opted for the sticky toffee slice and a latte and both agreed it was a good choice.

The Dunvegan also offers food on an evening which we are looking forward to trying in the future. The menu is full of locally sourced and Scottish ingredients cooked with an Argentine twist. The dinner menu is called the Asado Fire Menu which even sounds mouth watering.

The toilets

The main toilet are upstairs but don’t worry the downstairs toilet is unisex if you cannot manage stairs. Tucked away behind the reception desk under the stairs it offers a baby changing table as well. Whilst it is not a disabled toilet there is a large window ledge in the cubicle if you need something to lean on for help. If you need more help than this the car park in Dunvegan Village has a disabled toilet for which you need a radar key. There is also a disabled toilet in the castle car park.

The Dunvegan Deli

As well as the restaurant The Dunvegan has a well stocked deli selling a wide selection of products. They offer many products loose such as pasta, rice and cereals so if you are moving towards a zero waste lifestyle be sure to take your containers with you. Not only is there food in the Deli but a large range of toiletries and homewares to tempt you. Again some of the products are refillable so be sure to bring some empty bottles and containers with you.

It is easy to lose track of time in The Dunvegan with great food and great views across the loch to the MacLeod’s Tables, time ticks on by!
