The Caledonian Cafe

The Caledonian Cafe is on Wentworth Street in the centre of the village of Portree on the Isle of Skye. A small but popular cafe to meet and have lunch, coffee or ice cream . It has been closed for a couple of years but is now open again.

Getting to The Caledonian Cafe

The Caledonian Cafe

There are disabled parking spaces on Wentworth Street, Somerled Square, Bayfield Road and The Green so you have plenty of options for parking. The Caledonian Cafe is on Wentworth Street between Edinburgh Woollen Mill and MacIntyre’s newsagent. As you can see from the picture to the right there are a couple of steps from the pavement into the cafe. The entrance doors are narrow and floor space inside the cafe is at a premium. With all this in mind wheelchair users may be better looking at another venue for a meal. Some of the seating inside is free standing but there is a lot of booth seating. This then limits how much manoeuvring can be done. Sarah managed with her sticks as she was not using her wheeled walker on this particular day.

Sarah and Melanie headed to the Caledonian Cafe for a light lunch and catch up. Until 12 noon they served breakfast rolls, then from 12 noon it is the lunch menu. Here you find toasted wraps, salads, toasties, soup of the day, fries and daily specials on the board hung on the walls. The counter is also laden with cakes and sweet treats. And not to mention the ice cream you will have walked past as you entered.

If the cakes don’t tempt you the waffles, crepes and ice cream sundaes just might!

At the rear of the cafe are two toilets. Whilst neither are dedicated disabled toilets the rooms are quite large and give enough space to take a wheeled walker with you. These toilets would not be suitable for a wheelchair user. But there are bespoke disabled toilets on The Green and at the Highland Council offices if you cannot manage here.

Whilst not the most accessible cafe in Portree those with some limited mobility may find the Caledonian Cafe a very enjoyable stop.
