Isle of Skye Baking Company

You can find the Isle of Skye Baking Company set back from the A87 Dunvegan Road on the way out of Portree. If you are heading out of Portree it is the turning just before the big Howden’s building. A real hidden gem. The building itself was formerly a Woollen Mill. There is no allocated disabled parking spaces but the car park is large, smooth and on a level with the front door.

The Cafe area is downstairs and on a level access. As the furniture is all moveable wheelchair access would not be a problem. To the right hand side there is a lovely warm log burning stove you can sit next to in winter. This was the spot we chose as it was a cold wet day outside.

Food and Drink

While the bakery offers a good selection of light meals and drinks, the main attraction is definitely the baking. They offer a fantastic selection of home made breads and cakes. Filled lunch breads are their speciality as well as traditionally baked loaves. On our visit Melanie had a Latte and a Mint Chocolate brownie. Meanwhile Sarah enjoyed a Mulled Spice Tea and a Pear Frangipani Tart. Our order was brought to our table for us so there was no need to carry anything across the cafe.

It is a great place to pick up a foodie gift or to treat yourself. They sell jars of home made jams and chutney, as well as packs of biscuits and oat cakes. You can also find speciality teas, coffee beans and so much more. Many of which are already in presentation packs.

Throughout the year the Isle of Skye Baking Company attend local Farmer’s Markets and Shows across the Highlands as well as many Christmas events. The best way of keeping up to date with where they will be is on their Facebook page. Barry’s Bread van is always on the move taking fresh baked goods around the Highlands.

The Skyeworks Gallery

Upstairs in the Isle of Skye Baking Company is The Skyeworks Gallery. This is a showcase of work by local artists which you can buy as a momento of your visit to Skye or a treat for yourself.

The upstairs is not wheelchair accessible and maybe difficult for those with mobility issues. It is one steep flight of stairs with a small dogleg at the bottom. However the staff are more than happy to bring items downstairs for you to look at. Please ask at the Bakery counter for assistance with any items you may want to look at from The Skyeworks Gallery. During the winter months the gallery closes and all stock is brought downstairs into the cafe area. At other times of the year when the gallery is open it hosts exhibitions from both local artists and artists from further afield.
