The Croft Cafe is tucked away in the beautiful township of Duirinish, just 4 miles outside Kyle of Lochalsh. Perfectly situated if you are venturing to Plockton or further afield to Lochcarron or Applecross. After we spent the morning in Kyle it was the perfect spot to go and have a bite to eat for lunch.

The address for the cafe is Southside Duirinish but it is very easy to find. If you come into Kyle of Lochalsh from over the Skye Bridge, at the second set of traffic lights turn left. You are now on Main Street, bear right at the first Give Way line, then turn left at the next junction. It is signed Duirinish 4 miles. Follow this road out of Kyle, once you leave the built up area you have great views across Broadford Bay back to Skye. Eventually the road turns into a single track road with passing places so take care as you go. In a couple of miles you reach Duirinish and The Croft Cafe on the left hand side. Watch out for the infamous Hairy Coos on the road! The car park is all gravel with no parking spaces marked out so park wherever is convenient for you.

Lunch at The Croft Cafe

We visited The Croft Cafe for lunch having booked a table a couple of days earlier. We booked due to the Covid-19 restrictions as a lot of restaurants and cafes now have limited seating. The Cafe is a converted croft building but access is level throughout. Most of the furniture is free-standing so a chair could be moved to accommodate a wheelchair. There are currently plastic screens up between tables but this doesn’t detract from this light airy building at all.

For lunch we had toasted ciabattas, one filled with Brie & Bacon and the other a Tuna Melt. Both were delicious and served with a side salad, coleslaw and crisps. The menu is very varied with light bites, main meals, local seafood, soups and sandwiches. There really is something for everyone. I think next time we visit Melanie might be dabbling with the Potato Crispers as they sounded tasty.

As we had had a busy morning in Kyle on the Active Journeys Project we opted to stay and treat ourselves to cake for dessert. There were five or six sweet treats to choose from but we were tempted by a huge slice of Victoria Sponge Cake and a sticky Banana Caramel Cake. Again, both cakes were delicious.

The disabled toilet is very well equipped and was even up to Sarah’s exacting standards with not one but two flip top bins. No pedal bins here! There is plenty of space between tables to move around with a walking aid. Whilst Covid restrictions are in place the staff happily point out the feet on the screens to you so you don’t trip over them.

All in all we had a lovely visit and a very nice lunch. With all the visits we have to make to Kyle for the Active Journeys Project we could be heading to The Croft Cafe for lunch a few more times!
