After lunch at Cafe Cuil, we took a short drive to the parking area below Carbost War Memorial for a short and steep walk. Then we retraced our tracks down to the Merkadale burial ground, very close to Cafe Cuil for a short shoreside wander.

This week’s walk took us to the Ben Atekil Wind Farm track near Edinbane. A very accessible track which is a little of the beaten track for Skye. This track is most definitely accessible for both wheelchairs and off road scooters. You can walk as far as you like before you turn around and head back to your vehicle. A perfect spot for some peace, quiet and fresh air.

Dun Beag Broch is an excellent example of an Iron Age Round Tower on Skye. It still has a good amount of the walls intact. A very short walk from the car park you can go back in time and see how our ancestors lived. Visible on the skyline from the car park it is an easy walk to the bottom of the rocky outcrop on which it stands.

Bharcasaig Bay is a bit of a hidden gem on Skye. Usually only seen by locals and those headed to the MacLeod’s Tables or MacLeod’s Maiden. We are here to share this beautiful spot with you. Unfortunately wheelchairs will probably not be able to go the whole distance but it is reasonably accessible for most other abilities and well worth the visit.
Continue reading “Bharcasaig Bay”Neist Point is the most westerly point on the Isle of Skye. Located on the Duirinish peninsula it has been one of the must see places for visitors to the island. But be prepared for the journey there, as it isn’t for the faint hearted. You are sharing a single track road for 20 miles with everyone else trying to see this iconic view!
The Two Churches Walk is a circular route on the outskirts of Dunvegan. Covering approximately two miles it is not a wheelchair friendly walk and you will need a decent amount of mobility as the walk covers moorland and woodland tracks. Although not suitable for everyone with mobility issues, it is a lovely spot so it is worth giving it a try if you are able. A detailed description and full route can be found on Walk Highlands.
Continue reading “The Two Churches Walk”The Balmeanach Wind Farm Track runs through the Glen Vik Askill wind farm to Upper Edinbane. The track was built during the construction of the wind farm and is currently used for maintenance and recreation. We walked from the Balmeanach end of the track and found it very accessible indeed. In fact we would like to think anyone of any ability could enjoy a walk, push, cycle or propel along this track.
Last week we had a lovely walk down Edinbane Old Road. It was lovely until the rain came and we got drenched! That said it is an excellent surface for everyone to use, probably better than the current road that vehicles use every day. With that in mind it would be safe and accessible for wheelchairs, pushchairs, dog walkers, kids scooters and walkers alike.
It is a short walk to the ruins of Dun Fiadhairt just north of Dunvegan. Here you find the remains of an Iron Age Broch some 17 metres in diameter. The structure reveals internal and external broch walls and doorways. Not a walk for wheelchair users but only a mile or so for those wanting to stretch their legs. If there has been heavy rain the ground is very very boggy so maybe visit in drier weather.
